Dr. Benedito (from Lisbon, Portugal) obtained his MSc (summa cum laude with honours) in Faculty of Sciences University of Lisbon in 2002 and his PhD in Genetics and Vascular Biology from the Technical University of Lisbon in 2008. He worked as a postdoctoral researcher at London Research Institute-Cancer Research UK and Max Planck Institute for Molecular Biomedicine. He joined the National Center for Cardiovascular Research (CNIC, Madrid, Spain), in 2012. His group received European Research Council Grants in 2014 and 2020. Dr. Benedito serves as EVBO Council member since 2021.
Mission statement
Dr. Benedito´s research interests lie in developing new genetic technology of broad interest and the understanding of the molecular mechanisms controlling angiogenesis during organ development and in disease. The group is using diverse genetic approaches to characterize new molecular mechanisms regulating endothelial cell heterogeneity and biology. This includes understanding how endothelial cells proliferate and become specified to form sprouting tip cells, arteries and veins. The group is also characterizing the vascular response to pharmacological treatments aimed at inducing angiogenesis in cardiovascular disease settings.
