We are looking for an enthusiastic vascular Research Associate with a strong interest in patient- and disease-specific organ/tissue-models. This 3-year post is funded by the British Heart Foundation to investigate the role of Arf signaling in organ-on-a-chip model of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH).
PAH is an incurable disease, characterised by high blood pressure in the lung arteries. Activation of Arf GTPases contributes endothelial dysfunction in PAH. This project aims to identify the mechanism of Arf6-dependent changes in membrane receptor trafficking, identify strategies of Arf6 targeting and evaluate the effect of Arf6 activity changes on pulmonary vascular function in vitro, using cellular and translational approaches in a novel microfluidic pre-clinical platform, pulmonary artery-on-a-chip (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dqniQfROc9A).
The work combines expertise across a range of in vitro techniques, including cell culture, qRT PCR, molecular cloning, immunostaining/histochemistry, luciferase reporter assays, Western blotting, GTP-binding assays, scanning ion conductance microscopy, fluorescence confocal microscopy and image analysis.
You will be expected to submit publications to refereed journals and to attract external research funding.
Duties and responsibilities
You will join a multidisciplinary team of basic scientists and clinicians working on pathogenesis of pulmonary hypertension. You will help to generate new knowledge on disease aetiology, underlying biochemical pathways and mechanisms. Under the academic mentors’ guidance, you will support the development of a new microfluidic platform for personalised medicine, pulmonary artery-on-a-chip.
- PhD in molecular/cell biology or a closely related discipline, or equivalent research, industrial or commercial experience
- Knowledge of research methods and statistical procedures
- Practical experience within a research environment and/or publication in relevant and refereed journals
- Practical experience in a broad range of cell and molecular biology techniques
- Experience in confocal microscopy imaging techniques
- Computer literate with a good knowledge of different computer programmes with experience in data presentation and statistical analyses
This is a full-time, 36 months post, based at the Hammersmith Campus, Du Cane Road, London W12 0NN.
