Lars Maegdefessel studied Medicine at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz, Germany. After receiving his doctorate and completing a clinical fellowship in cardiology, he joined the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine at Stanford University, USA. After spending 3 years as a postdoctoral researcher in Stanford, he accepted an appointment as Assistant Professor of Molecular Vascular Medicine at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden. In spring 2016 he was appointed Professor of Vascular Biology at the Technical University Munich through the German Center for Cardiovascular Research (DZHK), partner site Munich Heart Alliance. Prof. Maegdefessel serves as an EVBO Council member since 2021.

Mission statement

Lars Maegdefessel is interested in the contribution of non-coding RNAs to vascular disease development and progression. Within vascular pathologies, his research team focuses on atherosclerotic plaque vulnerability (mainly in carotid arteries) and expanding aortic aneurysms, utilizing a variety of translational and multi-omics approaches to discover novel treatment and biomarker approaches. His research teams in Munich and Stockholm have access to various human biobanks and are developing novel preclinical in vitro (artery-on-a-chip) and in vivo (genetically mutated mini-pigs) models to better combat the burden of vascular diseases.
